BARK SIDING POP-OUT MOUNTAIN WINDOWThis
photo of one of our projects under construction illustrates our love
of bracketry and detail, to enhance mountain imagery. A whirlpool
tub is inside this feature, satisfying the
Bubblebath-Mozart-Candles-Whirlpool-Mountain View dream of many of
our clients. |

BIG BEAR LODGE, Highlands, NC7,700
gsf large estate home (5,100 sf heated) designed specially for
mountain environments. One version is now under construction in Lake
Toxaway, NC. On the elevation to the left, most of the front walls
are faced with primitive Blue Ridge mountain stone, with some
accents of 24"
square poplar bark shingles. The roof is a new breed of slate tile.
Special arched-top windows designed by our firm grace the view
areas. Our version of "Adirondack stone blade" arches
enhance the timeless quality of the homes' appearance. Large timber
and debarked log posts and beams compliment the home with a massive
structure that gives people a feeling of permanence. |
BOULDER FALLS LODGE: AN AMERICAN CASTLE |
| Rand
Soellner Architect is creating this one-of-a-kind Appalachian style
stone castle for clients on 50+ acres between Highlands and
Franklin, NC. The mansion has over 9,365 heated square feet and over
16,015 sf gross including the outdoor living room, outdoor kitchen,
outdoor sleeping rooms, decks and waterfall balconies and terraces.
Nestled onto a sloping boulder field on the side of a mountain, we
are enhancing some natural springs and creating two man-made
recirculating waterfalls that pass under the mountain-facing decks,
through pumps and out over the monumental steps on the main view
side. Spectacular flying buttresses of stone, reminiscent of Notre
Dame Cathedral brace the front and side elevations and the guest
entry gallery. 9 foot tall arched Loewen windows made of Douglas fir
grace the perimeter. A slate roof shelters the home and copper
gutters and downspouts drain rainfall away. The terrace includes an
indoor lap pool, recording studio, home office, crafts room,
additional bedrooms and storage. The main level has a magnificent
Great Room, open plan Kitchen-Breakfast-Dining, Master Suite with
palatial bathroom, multiple fireplaces, several guest bedroom
suites, garage and outdoor living spaces that capture the long-range
mountain views. A glass View elevator affords views over the
swimming pool on the Terrace Level up to the Breakfast area on the
main level. |

STONE COTTAGE COMPETITION WINNERRand
Soellner Architect recently won a design competition with this stone
cottage. The concept judiciously utilized the client's budget by
focusing the expensive stone detailing at entrances and at quoins
(corners) and in some stuccoed areas. A slate roof is the crowning
glory. Round rose windows bring in light at upper end gables and
century-old half timbers and stone grace the end walls. Unique
eyebrow clearstories create interest on the roof planes and chimney
pots terminate roof penetrations. The floor plan is spacious, with
Kitchen-Dining-Hearth Room connected. Large windows frame view of
the golf course's signature hole. Stone walkways lead to the
detached Garage, which has a spacious bunkroom. |

Wolf LodgeWe
created several homes in a special mountain lodge series for an
entire community. The developer loved one of our 4BR-4Ba-2car plans
and wanted to use it as the main offering, but we agreed that the
elevations should vary to give the neighborhood interest. |
